Why Join a Fraternity?
It is not unusual to hear a fraternity man credit his chapter for contributing more to his education than the classes he attended at college. Why?
As a new student to the Oregon State University, you are no doubt being hit with a barrage of information about the wide variety of experiences that college life has to offer. Spend as much time as possible reading and evaluating this information, the things that you will learn are not fabrication, and if you’re serious about making the most of college and life, you will find them important.
A lot of students attend OSU. People from backgrounds as far ranging as you can imagine. You will come into contact with many in your classes. Some you will develop friendships with. You will also get a first class education inside of the classroom from quality faculty. However, you will do your greatest learning outside the classroom, and you will develop your lifelong friendships from those you meet in organizations.
And guess what? It is these things which the Greek system is best at helping develop. It is these abilities, this learning outside of the classroom that makes the Greek system what it is. By banding together as a group of individuals with common objectives, an atmosphere is fostered where leadership, communication, conflict management and interpersonal skills are demanded. Out of this need springs learning, adapting and personal growth. Fraternity life, above all the many other benefits it offers, gives you practice for life in the real world.
So, when you hear a fraternity man credit his success to his fraternity…believe him!
Why Join Sigma Chi?
Many fraternities are similar, and you may wonder what is different about Sigma Chi. While initiation, dues, athletics, social events, and community service are all a part of Sigma Chi, its high ideals, strong brotherhood and broader meaning distinguish it from its peers. It is a continuous learning experience that begins during pledge ship and lasts a lifetime. Sigma Chi encourages interaction among men of different temperaments, talents and convictions; develops social skills; promotes leadership development; cultivates personal growth and responsibility. Sigma Chi is one of the oldest and most prestigious fraternities. With 229 chapters in the United States and Canada, and over 233,000 initiated members it is also one of the largest in the world.
Sigma Chi’s seek well-rounded, ambitious, and dedicated gentlemen. While some of of our members sought membership in Greek Life when coming to Oregon State, others never thought they would be a part of a fraternity until they rushed Sigma Chi. We take pride in eliminating fraternal stereotypes by focusing on the values of friendship, justice, and learning.
Academics
Academics is an extremely important component of our fraternity. Each year we have been able to place 2nd in grades among the 20 fraternities at Oregon State. Our fraternity is full of young men who are dedicated to pursuing a college degree and creating success for their future. The standard of our fraternity states that every Sigma Chi must be a “student of fair ability,” and we hold true to that standard.
Hazing
Sigma Chi at Oregon State University takes a firm stance against hazing. We believe that joining a fraternity should make one’s college experience memorable – not miserable. Unlike many fraternities, we believe in the inherent value of all individuals and subsequently, we treat others with respect and dignity. Pledging, we feel, should be a process of learning, inspiration, and achievement – not one of hazing, degradation, or humiliation.
